If you've shopped for compost recently, you've probably come across products labeled "Mushroom Compost." It sounds like compost made from mushrooms—but that's not actually the case.

Mushroom compost isn't composted mushrooms. It's typically spent mushroom substrate (SMS)—the growing medium left behind after a commercial mushroom crop has been harvested. While it can be an excellent soil amendment, many gardeners don't know what it actually is, how it's made, or why one mushroom compost may be very different from another.

Let's clear up some of the confusion.

What Are Spent Mushroom Blocks?

Before mushrooms can grow, commercial mushroom farms create a carefully formulated growing medium called mushroom substrate. Think of it as the "soil" that feeds the mushrooms.

The exact recipe varies by grower and by the type of mushroom being produced, but mushroom substrates commonly contain ingredients such as:

  • Straw

  • Horse or poultry manure (for many commercial button mushroom operations)

  • Corn cobs

  • Cottonseed hulls or cottonseed meal

  • Cocoa bean hulls

  • Brewer's grain

  • Gypsum

  • Peat moss and limestone (used as a casing layer during production)

The substrate is composted, pasteurized, inoculated with mushroom spawn (mycelium), and then used to produce one or more mushroom crops. Once it no longer produces mushrooms efficiently, it's removed from the growing rooms. That leftover material is called spent mushroom substrate or spent mushroom compost.

Is Mushroom Compost Good for Your Garden?

The short answer is: it can be.

Spent mushroom substrate still contains valuable organic matter, making it a useful soil amendment after mushrooms have been harvested. Like other composts, it can help improve soil structure, increase organic matter, support beneficial soil microbes, and improve the soil's ability to hold both air and water.

The important thing to understand is that these benefits aren't unique to mushroom compost. High-quality composts made from other organic materials can provide many of the same improvements to your soil. The biggest difference lies in the ingredients used to make the compost, which can influence characteristics like nutrient content, soluble salts, and pH.

Understanding those differences will help you choose the compost that's the best fit for your garden and your local growing conditions.

The Downsides of Mushroom Compost

There are a few considerations before using mushroom compost.

It can contain elevated salts.

Because of the ingredients used during mushroom production, mushroom compost often has a higher soluble salt content than traditional yard-waste compost. That's usually not a problem when incorporated into existing soil, but excessive applications can stress seedlings or salt-sensitive plants. 

It may increase soil alkalinity

Many mushroom substrates contain ingredients like gypsum and limestone, which can increase soil pH over time.

In many parts of the country, that isn't necessarily a concern. But here in New Mexico, our native soils and irrigation water are already naturally alkaline. Adding a compost made with limestone-based mushroom substrate may further increase soil pH, making certain nutrients less available to plants over time.

That's one reason it's important to understand what's in the compost you're purchasing. Different composts have different starting materials, and those ingredients can influence how they interact with your soil.

Every mushroom compost is different.

Perhaps the biggest misconception is that "mushroom compost" is a standardized product.

It isn't.

Every mushroom farm uses its own substrate recipe depending on the mushrooms being grown, available raw materials, and production methods. One product may contain primarily straw and manure, while another may rely more heavily on wood products or agricultural byproducts.

That means two bags labeled "mushroom compost" can have very different physical characteristics and nutrient profiles.

Can Any Compost Be Called Mushroom Compost?

Surprisingly, there is no industry standard that specifies how much spent mushroom substrate must be present for a product to be marketed as "mushroom compost."

Some manufacturers may use primarily spent mushroom substrate. Others may blend it with other composts or soil ingredients. Unless the manufacturer clearly explains what's in the product, it's often difficult for consumers to know exactly what they're purchasing.
