Every year, we receive a few phone calls from concerned customers.
"I found grubs in my compost. Did they come from Soilutions?"
It's a fair question.
The good news is that finding a few grubs in your garden usually isn't a sign that anything is wrong with your compost or soil. In fact, it's often a sign that nature has simply discovered a rich, moist place to continue its life cycle.
What Are Grubs?
The white, C-shaped insects you occasionally find in compost or garden soil are the larvae of scarab beetles.
Several species are common throughout New Mexico, and most spend a significant portion of their lives underground as grubs before emerging as adult beetles.
Depending on the species and weather conditions, the complete life cycle can take one year—or even longer. Different species are active at different times of the year, which is why gardeners may occasionally encounter grubs in almost any season.
Did They Come in the Compost?
In almost every case, no.
Our composting process reaches temperatures exceeding 140°F, which is hot enough to destroy weed seeds, plant pathogens, insect eggs, and insect larvae.
Throughout the composting process, temperatures are carefully monitored to ensure the material reaches and maintains these thermophilic temperatures.
By the time compost leaves our facility, it has completed this high-temperature process.

So How Did They Get There?
Adult scarab beetles are always looking for places to lay their eggs.
They prefer soil that is:

Moist
-
Rich in organic matter
-
Easy to burrow into
Freshly delivered compost or compost-amended soil checks every one of those boxes.
If a pile of compost or soil sits on a driveway, in a landscape, or in a garden for a period of time before being spread, it becomes an inviting place for beetles to lay their eggs.
Those eggs typically hatch within 10 to 14 days, and the tiny larvae begin feeding on organic matter and, eventually, plant roots.
By the time many gardeners notice the grubs, they've often developed after the compost was delivered—not before.
Why We're Confident They Didn't Come From Our Facility
In addition to our high-temperature composting process, there are a few other reasons this is unlikely.
Our compost moves through the facility quickly and doesn't sit for extended periods waiting to be sold.
Our manufacturing site is located in an industrial area with relatively little surrounding vegetation, making it far less attractive to egg-laying beetles than residential gardens filled with lawns, flowers, trees, and irrigated landscapes.
Once compost arrives at your home, however, it's suddenly surrounded by exactly the kind of environment beetles love.
Are Grubs Harmful?
Finding one or two grubs while gardening is perfectly normal.
In small numbers, they're simply part of the natural ecosystem.
However, large populations can feed on the roots of turfgrass, vegetables, flowers, and ornamentals, causing plants to wilt or decline.
If you're only finding an occasional grub while planting or turning soil, there's usually little reason for concern.
If you're finding dozens in every shovelful of soil, it's worth taking steps to manage the population.
How Can You Control Grubs Naturally?

Fortunately, there are several effective options.

Hand-pick them while gardening.

Turn the soil occasionally to expose grubs to birds and other predators.

Apply beneficial nematodes during the appropriate time of year.

Encourage natural predators such as birds and chickens.
(Our own team has been known to toss grubs they find in their gardens to their chickens—they're always happy to help with pest control!)
The Bottom Line
Finding a few grubs in your compost doesn't mean they came from the compost.
More often than not, it means local beetles found a moist, organic-rich place to lay their eggs after the material was delivered.
Our composting process reaches temperatures well above 140°F, effectively eliminating insect eggs and larvae during manufacturing. Combined with our quick product turnover and industrial location, it's extremely unlikely that grubs originated at our facility.
So if you uncover a few while gardening, don't panic.
It's simply another reminder that your garden is part of a living ecosystem—and sometimes nature decides to move in before you do.
