Soilutions' Grocery Recycling Program: High-Quality Compost, Powered by Food Waste

At Soilutions, we’re proud to offer compost that not only delivers exceptional results for your garden but also contributes to a more sustainable and resilient local environment. What makes our compost truly unique is its foundation: millions of pounds of food waste that we divert from landfills every year through our Grocery Recycling Program, launched in late 2024.

This innovative program allows us to recover massive amounts of organic material that would otherwise decompose in landfills and emit methane—a potent greenhouse gas. Instead, that material is transformed into nutrient-rich compost that feeds the soil, supports healthy plants, and builds long-term soil fertility across our region.

Why Food Waste Makes Better Compost

When it comes to compost ingredients, food waste is one of the most nutrient-dense organic materials available. It contains a diverse array of essential nutrients, moisture, and organic matter that supercharges microbial activity in your soil. This leads to:

  • Faster plant growth

  • Better water retention

  • Improved soil structure

  • A thriving soil microbiome

By using food waste as a key input, we’re able to offer compost that’s richer, more effective, and more sustainable than products made with inputs like biosolids or animal manures, which may contain residual chemicals or persistent herbicides.

The Tradeoff: May Contain Trace Amounts (≤1%) of Inorganic Material

To process this huge volume of food waste, we use advanced mechanical separation technology to remove any packaging before composting. Despite our best efforts, trace amounts (1% or less) of produce stickers or food packaging fragments may end up in the final product.

This is a common challenge in agricultural organic recycling, especially when dealing with packaged grocery waste. While we continuously refine and improve our process to reduce contamination, it is not always possible to eliminate it entirely.

Small fragments present are typically from food packaging, which is highly regulated and will not harm your plants. It may not be pretty—but it’s a minor and occasional side effect of a system that delivers enormous benefits.

The Big Picture: A Win for Your Garden and the Planet

By choosing Soilutions, you’re doing more than nourishing your soil with nutrient-rich, natural products—you’re supporting a powerful local solution to a global environmental issue. Together with our community and customers, we’re:

  • Diverting millions of pounds of food waste from New Mexico landfills every year

  • Reducing methane emissions and supporting climate resilience

  • Creating cleaner, safer compost to restore depleted soils across the region

You're making a choice that’s good for your garden, great for the environment, and a big step forward for our community.

Together, we’re growing healthier soil and a more sustainable future—one banana peel at a time.
