Pecan shells are a great alternative to gravel in xeriscape design, as pathways, and make terrific mulch for rose beds and potted plants. Using pecan shells rather than rock can reduce evaporative moisture loss and may help keep your yard a little cooler during the hottest days of summer. I have been using pecan hulls from Soilutions for about 20 years. I usually fetch these with my pickup truck but this year I decided to have my 3 yards delivered. All went perfectly! Thank you.
For those who have not used pecan hulls, they make a wonderful weed retarding ground cover. The initial color (red/orange) is very attractive although it bleaches in our intense sun. The main benefit is that it resists wind transfer although it will move downhill when exposed to strong flows of water. Since there is some nut residue in most loads this attracts pigeons although they get tired picking though the spread material after a few weeks. Overall, a great ground cover.
The service was amazing...the mulch was delivered to a different address listed under my account (my mistake not to clarify the delivery address) but the soilutions delivery people picked up the mulch the next day and delivered it to me. In the snow and rain I must say. I thought the service was great.
Another great experience with Soilutions. It was my first time trying the pecan shell mulch, and it is beautiful (and so light to cart around!).
I bought the pecan shell mulch as I an older and knew it would be lighter weight to spread than conventional mulch, which it is. The photographs do not do justice to their color. It is not a strong red but a more mellow soft brown and now I appreciate it on that score as well.

I have found your delivery staff very nice and helpful. I am dissapointed in the pecan shells, but that is not your fault. It is my fault for just not knowing enough about them. I used them in a small entry courtyard and they are sharp and don't stay in place well when walked on or when water hits them....and if you walk on the brick walkway in bare feet and there are a few shells on the walkway, it feels like walking on glass......wish I had known more about them but several people that I trust recommended them for this application. YIKES
I just can't give you a four star recommendation when I am so unhappy with them.
I love the fact that this is a NM product, which makes use of a portion of the pecan production process that could have just been dumped in the landfill. Additionally, pecan mulch is attractive and works its way into the soil. Overtime loosening up the heavy clay that is so common in our area.
I have purchased pecan mulch from local nurseries, including plants of the Southwest for years. This year I took advantage of the delivery option. I really appreciated not having to load all those bags of mulch into my car and make multiple trips to the nursery. My only complaint is my understanding was that the mulch would be delivered onto a tarp which would’ve made clean up easier.. The delivery was on time. I was not home, but they were able to leave it where I asked. I would definitely use Soilutions again.
