Freshly chipped wood contains large amounts of carbon. As beneficial soil microbes begin breaking down that fresh material, they need nitrogen as fuel for the composting process. If there isn't enough nitrogen available within the wood itself, the microbes temporarily draw it from the surrounding soil.

For established trees and shrubs, this usually isn't a problem because their roots extend well below the mulch layer. However, shallow-rooted vegetables, annual flowers, seedlings, and newly planted perennials can feel the effects if fresh wood chips are mixed into the soil or placed directly around their root zone.

When nitrogen becomes temporarily unavailable, plants may begin to show signs of deficiency. Leaves can turn pale green or yellow (especially older leaves), growth may slow, leaves may drop prematurely, and in severe cases, young plants can struggle or even die. Once the wood has broken down, that nitrogen is gradually returned to the soil, but the temporary shortage can stress sensitive plants.

Will Wood Mulch Attract Termites?

Fortunately, Forest Floor Mulch is very different from piles of fresh wood or lumber.

Termites feed primarily on cellulose, one of the natural components of wood. During the composting process, microbes begin breaking down much of that cellulose as the wood decomposes.

That means Forest Floor Mulch contains significantly less of the material termites are looking for than freshly cut wood.

As with any mulch, we still recommend keeping it several inches away from your home's foundation and avoiding direct contact with wood siding—not because the mulch attracts termites, but because proper moisture management is always good practice around buildings.
